UEP-conference 2015

Final conference “Understanding Employment Participation of Older Workers: Defining Research Needs for Evidence-based Policy” in Berlin

Extending working lives will be key to sustaining economic growth under conditions of demographic change. The Joint Programming Initiative “More Years, Better Lives” recognized the importance of understanding the employment participation of older workers and commissioned a large group of international experts to investigate the question of why some people work past the age of 50 years while others do not.

On 5 and 6 February 2015, the final conference of the project with about 120 participants from 15 countries took place in Berlin. It

  • has featured a broad and interdisciplinary view on the various determinants of employment participation at higher working age,
  • explored cross-country differences in retaining older workers, and
  • established the scientific dialogue with representatives of other large-scale studies and research funding organizations.

The objective was to exchange and advance ideas about current research needs for extending working lives in an aging society.
